How to stack & layer your jewelry for summer

Some people are into minimalism and the less is more approach. I am not one of those people. I like excess and colors and layers. I appreciate minimalism on other people, but that’s not me. It’s like they say: You do you and I’m going to do me.

This summer I’m really into the bohemian style with lots of jewelry. I think they look really cool. There’s something magic about having lots of rings stacked on your fingers and bracelets dangling on your wrists. It gives me this wonderful feeling of having a superpower – like I can do things I couldn’t normally.

Moving through people with your own sound (the clinking and chiming of all your jewelry) it’s just like leaving an audible perfume trail. It’s going to turn heads. Not that I’m particularly aiming for that. It just happens :))))).

Stacking rings on your fingers it’s an art in itself. You have to make sure they look good together. The stacking of jewelry needs a balance. How to wear multiple pieces of jewelry at once without looking like you pilfered a costume jewelry store or your grandma jewelry box is not easy. It’s all about geometry and proportions. Otherwise you'll end up looking like an extra in a rap video.

Tips and tricks Stacking Your Jewelry, gold temporary tattoos, California style

Here’s a few tips and tricks on how to stack your rings, bracelets and necklaces that I learned by trial and error through years of layering jewelry on myself:

-      When in doubt stick with one metal color. Pick either gold or silver and go from there. Either of them work great with contrast colors, bohemian pieces with gemstones and jewels. Silver jewelry and blue stones are a classic. Gold with black or green is a sure thing too.
-      If you feel confident, ignore the first rule and mix metals and textures for a personalized result. Different shades of gold can play off one another, pick up the light differently and look really beautiful mixed with colorful stones and different ring settings.
-       Center everything around one or two statement pieces. Right now I’m particularly obsessed with this ring so I would pile and anchor any other pieces I’d choose starting from and around it. This also works if you have a piece that you never take off, something that has sentimental value.
-     Mix and experiment with shapes, lines and different sized rings. Combining small, delicate rings with massive pieces, knuckle rings, or girly, feminine rings with rock&roll rings, always looks cool. Piling up horizontal and vertical rings will create the illusion that you didn’t go overboard and added one too many pieces on your fingers. Anything that involves a contrasting effect will work.
-      Combine vintage pieces with trendy rings, retro or classic pieces with modern jewelry, the mix of old and new will look interesting
-       Wear more of the same: I really love the Wonder Woman look – two identical bracelets worn on each of your wrists. Multiple, identical slim rings on different fingers can look really good too. Those midi rings are especially stackable and great to mix in with more elaborate jewelry.
-       If you’re not sure how to keep a balance between proportions, keep it simple by only mixing the same size rings: either slender rings with delicate stones or big, statement rings worn together. This works especially with necklaces. I feel that wearing delicate necklaces of different lengths with simple but interesting details looks amazing. Combining big statement necklaces can get sloppy really fast unless you’re a pro.
-       Juxtaposition is key – I like to leave some of my fingers bare or adorned with something really small and simple, while stacking multiple rings on other fingers. It’s all about creating that effortless feel – like you didn’t try too hard. The negative space will keep things from getting too symmetrical and boring.
-       You can add rings and bracelets to both your hands (I prefer that because I’m all about go big or go home) or stack your jewelry on just one of your hands (if you’re not there yet :)))).
-       Add a watch into the mix when piling on your bracelets
-     Try different combinations of rings and move them around your fingers until you are happy with the results

My ultimate fall wishlist

I love fall and if I’m being honest a big part of it has to do with the fall wardrobe that I’m always excited to dive in. It’s the perfect season to be creative: not too hot to wear light layers, not too cold to have to cover everything with a thick coat.

It’s that time of year when accessories can be worn for the pure pleasure of it and not just for comfort and warmth. You can still put on a lacy bra and leave it peek under a shirt that you top with a nice jacket. Fall with all its warmth and promise makes me want to buy lots of cool bags, classy hats, crazy patterned tights, funky gloves and colorful lingerie. I also feel like ditching all my heels for a while and just wearing sport inspired flats, espadrilles and fashionable sneakers with everything.

Seems like a good time to reinvent yourself starting with a little bit of a wardrobe revival!

For me it’s started as it always does - accidentally landing on a site that gives me lots of visual inspiration and items to add to my wish list. This time it was Simons and their lingerie section which brought me to the accessories page which then developed into actually making a few inspiration boards that I have to share. I’m do think I have a gift when it comes to making collages!

What do you think? Should I add “advanced skills in making collages” to my growing list of talents?

Redhead Supremacist - Christina Hendricks

I couldn't pass showing you this wonderful spread in the May edition of Flare magazine featuring my favorite redhead - the beautiful Christina Hendricks of Mad Men fame.

She looks absolutely stunning  in the photos taken by Max Abadian. That floral dress by Stella McCartney looks like it's been made for Christina, it's just so prefect for her coloring and voluptuous figure.

I also liked what she said about rejection in her interview and  how we shouldn't take it to personal and how it's not a refection on us or how good we are and has more to do with others expectations and million little things we can't control:

“I’ve been to a million auditions and have been rejected a million times, so it’s something that I’m used to. You’re either right for it or you’re not right for it. You could leave thinking you had the best audition in the world and they say you don’t look like the person I imagined.”

Oh, deer!

I love animals and especially deers, stags (everything with antlers really) so imagine my excitement when, last week, I got to see one with my own two eyes! Granted it was from a moving train, but still, it was quite near, just standing there mighty beautiful in a white filed.

Amazingly cool – if people say there is no magic in the world than they have never seen a stag in their life. Of course I didn’t have my camera with me – I usually don’t when something interesting or really worth taken pictures of happens.

I thought I should still write about it and share some visual deer themed inspiration with all of you.

Underwater magic

I just had to show you this amazing editorial from Numero 2008  I dig up in one of my many surfing trips on the World Wide Web. It’s called “Agua caliente” (warm water) and features a gorgeous Coco Rocha being a total drama queen in a bath tub covered in flowers and jewelry.

Every photo is constructed around a vibrant color and all of them look stunning against Coco’s aristocratic complexion. The  wardrobe choices are  a highlight as well - all those rich colors and the beautiful see-through textures floating around her paired with the powerful makeup (contrasting once again with her striking white skin and long black hair) transform these photos in something extremely inspirational.

There’s also the modern Ophelia reference that every Shakespeare lover out there (myself included) will surely appreciate. It really makes me want to take overtly glamorous baths and cover myself in decadent jewelry: baroque statement necklaces, emerald rings, huge sapphire earrings and lay in fields of wild flowers. Kind of wonderful to see the magic talented people can create around a bath tub filled with flowers infused water and one beautiful girl.

I hope this is going to bright your day as much as it did mine!

Downton Abbey decadence in LOVE (magazine)

I wanted to post these amazing photos for a long time now, but I always had another article ready before this so here I am, one month later, sharing with you issue 8 of Love magazine featuring the Crawley sisters aka the young ladies of hit show - Downton Abbey - you might remember me raving about it here

Apparently we have to thank Mark Jacobs for this treat - Love's editor, Katie Grand, admits she wasn't into the show initially, but she gave it a chance because Mark kept on mentioning it and she quickly got addicted and ended up watching it three times over.

The fall/winter issue of the magazine has 4 alternative covers - one for each of Lord Grantham's three daughters: Laura Carmichael (Lady Edith), Michelle Dockery (Lady Mary) and Jessica Brown Findlay (Lady Sybil) and a forth featuring the ridiculously handsome Rob James-Collier (Thomas - the footman).

I have a huge crush on Rob James-Collier! I mean, look at his face! Don't even get me started on the eyes!

But don't expect the cover editorial to be all about the Downton Abbey's characters, in fact there's no trace of them to be found in it!

The famed Crawley sisters are metamorphosed into decadent Gothic fairies that could star in a Tim Burton movie right out of the covers with their grandiose veiled wigs and dramatic makeup. The editorial titled "Dance with a Stranger" and the covers themed "A Costume Drama" were styled by Grant herself and shot by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott.

I think the photos are stunning - the actresses play a wonderful surrealist fantasy while wearing couture (Alexander McQueen and Vivienne Westwood).

What do you think? Do you find this inspiring or just plain weird? Are you a fan of Downton Abbey?
